I wanna dance with somebody!

I had no expectations when it came to going to see this film and when it was over I found myself with a profound feeling of sadness.

We can all agree that Whitney Houston had a remarkable voice and we are better for having known her music and for having been able to enjoy it. The gift she gave the world was priceless, and what the world gave back to her, insufficient.

Many details of her life were new to me. Having been trained up by her mother, ‘Sissy”, a successful singer herself, and her Father who struck me as being a dishonest and philandering man from the beginning.

The story brings to life her discovery by Clive Davis and her rise and fall from stardom. The actress, Naomi Acki, does a fine job of portraying her and highlights the skill that she had for identifying songs that would be a good match for her as well as the development of her own music.

I have a feeling that her life with Bobby Brown was “downplayed” as regards his treatment of her and the role he may have played in her drug use. At the end of the day, a life lost too soon and a soul we were blessed to know.
