Reading Crime Novels in a Time of Instant News and Crime on the Rise

I started reading a book recently and I was surprised frankly, by how many times I picked this book up and would put it down after a few pages.

It seems as though I have become acutely aware of the violence that surrounds us in our world these days. So much so, that when I read a line in the book, where the killer is applauding himself for the fine job he is doing, attempting to fool the police and concerned that he must stay one step ahead of them, I thought “why am I reading this?”, and put it down, only to start again the next evening before bed, not wanting to give up. Thinking maybe it will get better?

I began reading this particular story a few weeks after four college students were brutally murdered in their sleep in Utah. I found myself, probably with most of the world, concerned at how this could have happened and wondering why they hadn’t found the person or persons responsible.

Then one evening, while doing my nightly reading before bed, it occurred to me “Why am I reading this?” It’s tough enough in real life to see law enforcement trying to solve a crime, especially when details must be kept at a minimum to preserve the integrity of the case. Until finally, the perpetrator is found and the legal process begins.

I have always been a fan of mystery and intrigue, but suddenly, art is more than ever, imitating life. I am considering giving mystery and crime thrillers a break. Maybe I will restrict myself to coloring books for a while.
